No Blues with Blueberries
Little Berry, Big Benefit

Blueberries probably should be called BLISSberries because they’re so healthy and beautifully blue. Here’s why they’re so blissful—they’re super loaded with antioxidants and phytosterol (like their cousin the cranberry). Blueberries are ranked the number one fruit provider of these antioxidants. Research shows these substances have been helpful in lowering cholesterol, encouraging heart health and protecting the body against certain types of cancers.
Native Americans used blueberries to treat coughs and blood disorders. In Russian folk medicine, blueberries are used as a preventive measure for abdominal problems. During World War II, British Royal Air Force pilots consumed blueberries to improve their night vision. Later studies showed that blueberries are high in bioflavanoids, which are used by the rods in the eye for night vision. Blueberries are also high in iron. And who can deny their tasty, burst-in-the-mouth flavor that we love to add to fruit salads, smoothies and pies? So don’t wait for summer to enjoy the blissful bounty of the humble blueberry.
