Easy Does It

Sukhasana for Yogis

Yogis around the world are sitting pretty - in Easy Pose, the foundational posture for yoga. This cross-legged position is most commonly used for meditation, but it’s also a base for many great yoga exercises, such as camel ride. Easy Pose is great for strengthening the back, calming the mind and stretching knees and ankles.

You can practice this posture sitting cross-legged on the floor or sitting in a chair—just be sure your spine is straight and weight equally balanced on both buttocks. Your foundation should be solid so you can sit still. (Many people choose to sit on a sheepskin or a meditation pillow.) One foot is tucked inside, and the other is placed against the outside of the opposite leg. The knees are relaxed down toward the floor as far as possible. As you relax in this posture, sit quietly with your hands in gyan mudra, eyes closed, breathe long and deep and go within. It’s easy to do Easy Pose!
