Window to the Spine

Your Fountain of Youth

Those who study the bio-mechanics of the backbone say, “posture is the window to the spine.” The yogis say, “You’re only as old as your spine.” So open your shades and let the light in!

When viewed from the side, the spine has three curves, allowing for a natural “spring” action. See for yourself! Sit upright on the floor and balance your spine side-to-side and front-to-back. Then feel it’s up-and-down. The spring occurs when you straighten up and let gravity do its work. It’s normal to have resistance. Accidents, poor posture, and everyday wear and tear can cause the straightening or even reversal of your proper spinal curves. When altered, the "spring” can disappear and instead, plain old gravity causes extra stress on the bones, muscle shortening, and reduced elasticity in the ligaments. But just as this tissue re-molds itself under stress, if you provide yourself some “healthy” stress – through yoga, core strengthening, and ergonomic awareness – you can become your spine’s savior, and discover your own fountain of youth.

Would have liked more specificity as to which yoga postures are beneficial and which should be avoided in core strengthening and increasing spinal flexibility and strength. Have just been diagnosed as having osteoporosis of the spine.
