Riddle of the Sphinx

How to Move Your "Dead Zone"

Physiologists who have studied the biomechanics of the spine call the tight little area between your shoulder blades "the dead zone,” it gets so little movement. Here’s an easy-to-do yoga posture that breathes new life into that troublesome area.

First, lie on your stomach and rise up on both elbows, forearms on the ground, elbows directly beneath your shoulders. Look a little down between your hands. Pull your shoulders wide, then bring the blades closer together, so your mid-back drops. Tuck your chin toward the neck and pull your head directly backwards. Feel the stretch in the dead zone and upper back. Hold for 5-10 seconds. Relax and repeat 10-15 times. Try again sitting on your heels, with your hands flat on the floor in front of the knees. For a little extra, with your head in its drawn back position, tilt your head directly to the side. Listen to the secrets your vertebrae are whispering – they will improve your life!
